Psychodynamic Therapy

The benefits of Psychodynamic Therapy is that you can explore the roots of the issues that are present within your life, especially if you have noticed ongoing patterns of the same problems. This form of therapy can either be short or long term depending on your needs, goals, and whether or not you may benefit from it.

Oftentimes, when people think of Psychodynamic therapy, it gets confused with psychoanalytic therapy, where a client is free associating (talking) without any immediate inputs from the therapist. Although, Psychodynamic therapy is grounded within the foundational principles of Psychoanlaytic theory (developed by Sigmund Freud), a Psychodynamic therapist is much more interactive with their clients.

The therapy work include clients gaining insight on how the past is affecting them from living a more fruitful life. Other key benefits of Psychodynamic therapy is the facilitation of experiencing difficult/repressed emotions in a safe, warm, non-judgemental space whilst blocking the unhelpful defense mechanisms.

We all use defense mechanisms to cope and function with life’s stressors. Sometimes, we use unhelpful ones that are out of our awareness, and thereby, can serve as barriers by increasing the sense of feeling stuck, or not knowing what else to do to live a more thriving, successful and balanced life.

Also noteworthy is through your professional alliance with your therapist, you gain insight in how you relate to yourself and others. A person can improve their relationships with Psychodynamic therapy; a few examples include, being able to set clearer and maintain healthier boundaries, increasing your self-esteem, or re-working the process of your attachment styles in relationships.

Psychodynamic therapy is an evidenced-based practice for a wide range of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, obsessive compulsive disorder, and personality disorders because clients work toward having a more deeper long-lasting change.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Over the years, since it’s first introduction, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) has been found to help with a broad range of mental health related concerns such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and with adolescents who are struggling with impulsivity. This therapy approach, a cognitive behavioral therapy variation, was developed by Marsha M. Linehan, PhD, in the 1980s.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy seeks to bring equilibrium in a person’s life by encouraging them to find the balance between two opposing views or forces whilst developing effective skills to cope. Dr. Linehan’s extensive research and clinical work found this approach to be useful for helping clients with Borderline Personality Disorder and self-harming behaviors to live at their best potential by using the DBT skills and individual therapy to effectively cope with mental health challenges.

What is included in DBT Skills Group?

DBT skills include four modules containing practical skills to assist clients with managing emotions, thoughts, relationships, and dealing with life crises situations. The four modules are Mindfulness, Emotion Balancing, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Distress Tolerance Skills. These skills are not only useful for those who have a mental health condition, but also useful for those who want to seek a more balanced state of mind, thrive in their relationships and cope with difficult emotions and thoughts.
